The Life-Work Compass: Navigating Change Without Losing Your Direction
When life hits hard, your design becomes your lifeline.
Read Time: 5–6 minutes.
I’ve been quiet for a couple weeks. Not because I stopped writing—because I was busy living the next chapter of this story.
Since the last Dispatch, life has been life-ing. Fast.
In Life:
I changed my diet, lowering sugar and processed carbs. Your body is the one vehicle you never get to trade in, so I’m committed to being well enough to drive this mission forward.
My four-year-old daughter lost her first two teeth. Milestones like that make you pause. Smile. Reflect.
Today would have been my grandmother’s 95th birthday—her first birthday without her. She’s not here physically, but her legacy lives on through me—especially as I renovate our childhood family home to make space for the next generation of “Morris.”
In Work:
I'm leading an enterprise-wide skills strategy—navigating data, prioritization, and complex execution work.
I keynoted at Industrious on a topic close to my heart: Resilient Influence—how to thrive in fast-paced, high-stakes environments without losing your voice or vision.
And through it all, I’m building the Future-Proof Career Blueprint and finalizing a powerful Future-Ready Skills Assessment to help people design their next move with data-backed clarity.
But here’s what all of this reminds me of—and what I want to share with you:
Life-Work Design is not theory. It’s practice.
It’s what you return to when you’re tired, tested, or transitioning.
Let’s Talk About the Next Layer: Career Wayfinding
In the last issue, I broke down the Career Portfolio Playbook—how to build multiple skill-based income streams so your future isn’t tied to one employer.
Missed it? Read: The Career Portfolio Playbook
It’s your foundation for designing optionality before you start wayfinding.
But here’s the next level:
How do you navigate uncertainty while you’re building?
Because right now, the world is full of it:
Wars and elections are reshaping economies.
AI is rewriting the rules faster than most can adapt.
Roles are unbundling while expectations keep increasing.
So here’s the truth:
Stability isn’t found in your job title anymore. It’s found in your ability to wayfind.
To pivot with clarity. To move forward with purpose—even when the map keeps changing.
What Is Career Wayfinding?
It’s the personal GPS you build through life-work design.
It’s not just about knowing the next step. It’s about trusting your ability to create options—even in chaos.
It’s part resilience. Part intuition. And part design strategy.
You don’t control what happens around you. But you do control how prepared you are when it happens.
My Recent Reality Check (and What It Taught Me)
I didn’t stop publishing because I lost the thread. I paused to live what I teach.
Here’s what keeps me grounded during a hectic season:
I have career leverage—high-value skills that let me stay useful and in demand.
I have income optionality—opportunities to speak, coach, and consult beyond my 9–5.
I have purpose-driven alignment—knowing that every decision was rooted in the legacy I wanted to build.
The real value of designing your career is that it shows up when life hits.
You don’t have to chase the next title. You don’t have to accept just any opportunity.
You get to choose—with clarity and confidence.
How to Start Wayfinding Through Uncertainty
1. Reconnect with your “why now.”
Are you building to escape… or to expand?
The answer shapes your entire strategy.
2. Double down on your anchor skills.
When things feel shaky, start with what you know.
Your anchor skill is the easiest to monetize, stack, or evolve.
3. Audit your optionality.
Can you walk away from a toxic role?
Can you say no to a misaligned project?
Optionality = power. Power = peace.
4. Create systems that hold when you can’t.
Your routines. Your support circle. Your boundaries.
Design them while you're calm—so they protect you when you're not.
You’re Not Late. You’re Right on Time.
If you’re feeling like you’ve fallen behind—because you haven’t launched yet, or scaled yet, or mastered your message yet—
I see you.
You’re not behind. You’re building.
And if the road’s been messy, you’re in good company.
This movement isn’t about perfection. It’s about progress on your terms.
Your Next Move
Next week, I’ll walk you through auditing your portfolio and aligning it with your season of life.
But for now, I’ll leave you with this:
What part of your career are you building intentionally this quarter?
Hit reply. I’d love to hear.
Let’s keep building.
